What is Mesotherapy? And does it really work?

It was first developed in France in 1952 by Dr. Michel Pistor, as a treatment for sports injuries and a way to improve circulation.

Since then, uses have moved on and it is now used to treat various skin conditions such as:

  • Dull skin
  • Loss of elasticity and tone
  • Superficial lines and wrinkles
  • Hair thinning
  • Stretch marks
  • Loss of volume

Mesotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that involves injecting a cocktail of vitamins, minerals and amino acids in the skin’s mesodermal layer (middle layer). This infusion of smart ingredients revitalises and nourishes the skin.

So, what are the benefits?

Besides improving dull skin and superficial wrinkles, mesotherapy improves blood circulation and helps the body eliminate toxins associated with ageing. It can also treat pigmentation problems, treat acne, acne scarring and acne keratosis.

How is it different from anti-wrinkle injections?

‘Is it an anti-wrinkle injection?’. This is a common question asked by our clients when offered mesotherapy. The simple answer is no. While the treatment may help improve the appearance of wrinkles, it shouldn’t be seen as a replacement for other skincare procedures like anti-wrinkle injectables.

Anti-wrinkle injections reduce the look of wrinkles by temporarily paralysing the facial muscles, treating the wrinkles caused by movement. Mesotherapy, on the other hand, nourishes the skin layer by layer, improving the skin texture.

Taken together, the two can be an excellent option for those looking to significantly improve the appearance of the skin.

How do you prepare?

First, it is important that you research your clinician and choose an aesthetician who has vast experience with mesotherapy. Dr Razi and Dr Bonelli both have a range of experience with this treatment and they will work with you to find the right ‘cocktail’ of vitamins, minerals and amino acids that suits your skin type and quality.

On the day, very little preparation is required from you.  Always come to the practice having slept well the night before. Avoid drinking alcohol the night before and make sure you are well hydrated and your skin is clean of any makeup or cream.

After the treatment, apply plenty of sunscreen to protect your skin. You should also avoid other skin procedures before your complexion fully heals. Leave at least one week for any other treatments such as laser treatments, peels, or fillers.

Be sure to ask your doctor questions along the way to understand the procedure fully. Ask what they’re injecting, how they administer the treatment, and for before and after photos, so you know what to expect.

Post-procedure, you should avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours after treatment – think of it as a great excuse to skip the gym. You should also stay away from the sun for a few days too.

You’ll probably need several mesotherapy sessions to get the desired effect. You should expect to return to the doctor between three to 15 times. At first you’ll get the injections every 7 to 10 days. If your skin starts to improve, the treatments will be stretched out to once every two weeks or once a month and eventually once every six months to a year.
